ERFD Responds to Hazmat Incident At Diamond Chemical Company
At approximately 1:30pm, the ERFD was dispatched to Diamond Chemical, located at the corner of East Union Avenue and Dubois Street for an activated water flow alarm.
Upon arrival, the building was in the process of being evacuated and investigation determined a chemical reaction had taken place. Out of an abundance of caution, Incident Command issued a shelter-in-place order for the immediate area that could potentially be impacted. Alerts were issued in the Borough of Rutherford due to wind conditions and members of the ERPD and ERFD made verbal contact with affected businesses in the area. No other areas of East Rutherford were impacted.
The Bergen County Hazardous Materials Response Unit responded and deemed air quality to be safe and the order was immediately lifted.
As a result of the building evacuation, an unattended machine also caught fire which was extinguished by units on scene.
There were two injuries to employees on the scene and they were transported to the hospital for treatment.
A full investigation is still on-going.
